An important update about domain transfers:
Domain name rules have been changed to in some cases
assume the positive on domain transfer requests unless
the request comes back negative. What that means for you
is that if someone requests to transfer your domain and
you do not reply to the transfer request email, then the
request may proceed in any case. These rules are set out
by the Internet Corporation For Assigned Names and Numbers
and can be found here.
In most cases this should not affect our clients or their
businesses, however, a few simple precautions can ensure
your business is protecting its domain:
-
Lock your domain
-
Ensure the admin contact email address
is valid and under your control
-
If your receive a transfer request be
sure to respond to it
-
If someone has registered the domain
on your behalf and is listed as the email contact ensure
they will not grant transfer requests without your permission
Should you have any questions about your domain or about
a transfer request you receive, please call 403.228.1800.
Domain Name Information
Did You Know?
81% of Canadians agree that Canadian businesses
and organizations should use dot-ca for their websites,
and 71% prefer to use dot-ca website services, rather
than dot-com services, because they know dot-ca is Canadian
(1)
Your business Domain Name is like your address on the
internet, whether its mycompany.com or ourservice.ca,
or some derivation of one or both.
What that means for your business is that your domain
name is both important to the way people find you and
an extension of your brand. For many businesses, balancing
these two purposes for their domain can be a challenge.
To be truly effective, your domain name should also be
simple and memorable enough that it can be used in your
advertising and other media as well.
The 3 Most Important Factors when Registering a Domain:
Effective Online Management
– your business should have complete control over
your domain whenever you need it via online tools. Be
wary of discount registrars whose online management is
cumbersome, especially if you manage more than one domain
name at a time. Also beware of registrars who may charge
for things like email forwarding, domain forwarding, online
tools, or customizable DNS services.
Local Presence - There are almost
countless sellers and resellers of domains online, and
some of them even offer decent services instead of just
rock bottom prices, especially if your comfortable in
another language and trust the online credit card handling
in Asia or Europe. For most businesses though, it makes
more sense to buy locally. Your business can still get
all the tools and a decent price, but with the added
convenience of a local phone number to call for name
advice, billing questions, or even troubleshooting.
Competitive Pricing – As important
as effective online management tools and local service
are, your business can still demand these features at
a low cost. There are simply too many providers for
your business to have to pay a big premium for what
should be standard service. Demand a local presence,
great features and a great price.
