There are two basic types of employment agency.
The first type concentrates only on running online job
boards. They post jobs and career seekers send their applications
directly to the employer. These companies do not usually
provide individualized recruiting services to career seekers
nor do they normally charge career seekers for using their
services. The advantage of online job boards is that they
tend to have a wider variety of positions and operate
on a regional, national or international basis.
The second type is commonly known as recruiters. Recruiting
agencies offer personalized service to career seekers
and help them to find employment. They will act as intermediaries
on the career seeker’s behalf and will setup interviews
with prospective employers. Recruiters charge a percentage
of the career seeker’s salary or wage to the employer
but some may also collect a percentage directly from the
career seeker.
In both cases, some companies specialize in certain fields,
e.g., administration, technology, oil and gas, etc. Before
just sending your résumé to a employment
agency make sure to review their site and make sure that
they place people with your skill set.
